Opportunity Abounds

Well, speak of the devil (figure of speach, not suggestion.) After finishing my last post, I got an email from my alma mater, Occidental College — Yo Truimphe! — about a seminar happening next weekend about immigration. Here is the info. if you are interested in attending (it is open to non-Oxy alumni.)
The Future of Southern California’s Population:
Immigration and Diversity
Occidental College – Booth Music Quad
Saturday, April 16
9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Whether it’s the French Government wringing it’s hands over the influx of Muslims, the Minutemen acting as vigilantes at the Mexican border, or any number of related events, the hard questions of immigration are confronting us as never before. The Alumni Association is conducting a three hour seminar on this subject on April 16th in Booth Hall (in the music quad). It promises to not only be timely, but very lively as well.

No Oxy tiger should miss this one!

Southern California today has 20 million residents. The changes in that population over the next twenty years – its total size, its growth, and its composition – will affect many other features of life in the region: housing, water, energy, jobs, and transportation. Later sessions in this series will examine these issues, but the first session will assess who lives here now—and who will in the future.

A knowledgeable panel of speakers representing different points of view on these issues will participate including Dr. Gene Grigsby ’66, President of the National Health Foundation in Los Angeles and a member of Oxy’s Board of Trustees; Angelica Salas ’93, Executive Director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, (CHIRLA); and Rick Oltman, the Western Field Coordinator for the Federation of American Immigration Reform (FAIR). Sid Gardner ’63, a member of the Alumni Association’s Board of Governors, who has recently written a novel on the future of relations between California and Mexico, will serve as the moderator and discussion leader.
