So, now that we are done with the certification to be a Fost/Adopt home in California, and are now having our portfolio being shown to potential birthparents [aka: being “on the market”] - what’s next, you might be asking? When is this baby coming?The answer is ANY DAY now… sort of. I could recieve a phone call at any moment (since Vero & I designated me to recieve the 1st call) with the all important info. As we met with the director of the agency - Bethany Christian Services - 2 weeks ago, I asked him more specifically what that looks like, since the average ‘wait time’ for an adoption placement is 6-18 months.

He said it typically works 1 of 2 ways. About 20-30% of the time, the phone call we could get would be along the lines of “you’ve been selected, the baby has been born, come down tomorrow to take her or him (or both?) home.”

But the majority of the time, he said, that all-important 1st phone call will mean that a birthmom has looked at our portfolio and is really interested in meeting us before selecting us for her child, which is still in her ‘tummy’. It could be anywhere after 7-8 months (of pregnancy) that this would happen. And, honestly, this is our best case scenario. We would really like to be there for the delivery, if the birthmom would be comfortable with having us there.

So that is what we are waiting on. And though the average time is 6-18 months, we have a sense - based on our openness regarding ethnicity - that it might be less than that. But there are no guarantees and we are still finishing up painting the room for this child, as well as finishing up the endless list of odds & ends that come with having a child.
