Javi - Thanks for the heads-up. Is there a website for this? Or is a particular organization behind this campaign?

Also, can you give a little more info as to why some Boyle Heights residents are so pissed off? As a resident, I can see some advantages as well as shortcomings to this happenging. But what do you see as being problematic?

But back to Abner's comment--if the average customer is like Scott, better sell your shares in starbucks... but maybe they're moving in to convert Scott!

Tom, that must be the only rule. Here in Chino Hills Starbucks is bending that rule without breaking it. They are opening another Starbucks across the same parking lot from a Vons with a Starbucks in it already. They are so close you could throw baseball from into the other.

Starbucks just announced they're going to about double their outlets in the next 5 years, so anything is possible. Doesn't much matter who gets the ball rolling in a place without business and investment. Gotta be done.

I think the only rule governing Starbucks expansion is that you can't open a new Starbucks inside of an existing Starbucks.

Mark brings up a great point--whenever I go to my local Starbucks, I marvel at how $4 coffee is suddenly so accessible to the poor. Where I live, in Southeast San Diego, there are no less than 5 Starbucks in what I think is a 5 mile radius. There are also a couple of mom and pop coffehouses within that radius.

That said, the rationale for bringing a coffeehouse to Boyle Heights (and other similar neighboorhoods) make a lot of sense--for business, for the community. However, I prefer Coffee Bean to Starbucks. Hopefully CB will see the light and beat Starbucks to the punch.

It doesn't matter if it's $4, or $10. If customers in the area used the place as a second office like Scott does, no one would pay anyway.

As much as I think it's ridiculous to pay $4 for coffee when you're too poor to pay the rent, I could imagine this having a positive impact on the community. It won't just be a Starbucks next to a pawn shop and a nail salon - they will attract other businesses that will make at least one corner of BH more upscale.

This would have been a brave move before the Gold Line coming in. But as it is, they will probably build their shop right on 1st Street next to one of the new Gold Line stations. That's not altruistic - that's just plain smart business.
