Stories, thoughts & insights on Jesus, college students, and the Bible; Los Angeles, immigration, politics, ethnicity and culture, and also about my daughter Isabel - from a spanglish gringo father living in, learning from, leading & loving life in East L.A.

On two occasions, I've tried to talk with him directly. Unfortunately, on the first occasion, he was horribly drunk - an angry drunk - and proceeded to cuss me out over the fence at 10pm for 20-30 minutes. (I left just as he was getting started, but listened to the tirade from the luxury of my bedroom.)

On the second occasion, Veronica & I went over there in the afternoon together, hoping to avoid any over-the-fence remarks with a face-to-face discussion. While we didn't get cussed out, we got a pretty rude treatment from the spouse, along the lines of "what happens in our house is none of your business," not recognizing that the music isn't playing in their house.

But then they turned it down. Until about 9 o'clock, when they turned it up again. When I called in the noise-complaint and the police came, we got to "enjoy" another profanity filled tirade. No fun.

At this stage, I'm truly at a loss as to what to do. I know that the noise-complaints are effective in addressing the noise problem, but they only escalate the neighbor-to-neighbor problem. And I rarely see this neighbor, and even less since the first episode.

Any other suggestions for me? Seriously.

I used to go across the street barefoot and in my bathrobe and ask for folks to turn it down. Pretty much disarms the assholes at midnite.

If that doesn't work, got to go straight for the owner of the building.

We had a Latino absentee landlord living in Laguna Beach who owned a couple of properties right across from my house in Northwest Pasa. Tried to reason with him for about a year.

Eventually I ended up calling him at work and at his house repeatedly for about two weeks. Guess he got tired of the phone calls. He solved the problem.

I think when we become fathers, our ears become way more sensitive to noise. You are in a hard place. I've made noise complaints to the cops without success. What we've done is create a lot of 'white noise' for Layla. So whether it's a fan running or static off the radio. It helps to drown out some of the noise.

Don't you wish the RA could walk down and cite them and write a letter to the parents?

Scott, that's a though situation. If you continue to try to talk to them about it unsuccessfully, I can see no other option but to make noise complaints to the police if it keeps up. Good luck mang.
