Bumps in her smooth
Some family legacies get passed down from generation to generation. Much to her grampy’s chagrin, Isa has started to eat “bumps” in her “smooth.” For those outside of the clan, this phrase refers to a certain culinary aversion by some in our family towards things like nuts in ice cream or granola in yogurt, ie. no “bumps” in the “smooth.”
For Isa, her rebellious rejection of this family phrase has meant that over the last week or so, she has started to be able to recognize & control crunchy bits of food in the midst of the mushy consistency of food she normally eats. This is a big deal in her oral-motor development because it means she is able to move food around in her mouth, recognize different ‘textures’ of food, and has started chewing with her teeth - all without gagging. This is a great precursor to being able to eventually graduate from baby food to eating more table food.
So, despite the affront to the ‘no bumps in the smooth‘ tradition, I imagine grampy some folks can get behind this ‘rebellious’ detour by Isa.
